Meerkats: Social Creatures of the Desert
Meerkats are small, highly social animals native to the arid regions of Africa. In reserves, they live in carefully managed habitats that replicate the sandy plains and scrublands they call home. These habitats include underground tunnels where meerkats can rest, hide from predators, and rear their young.
Meerkats are known for their strong family bonds. A single group, or "mob," consists of up to 30 individuals, all working together to find food, guard against predators, and care for the young. Reserves ensure meerkats have access to insects, their primary diet, and protect them from threats like habitat destruction and predation by larger animals.
Educational initiatives in reserves often highlight meerkats' unique behaviors, such as their iconic stance on two legs while keeping watch. These programs help raise awareness about the importance of protecting smaller, often overlooked species.
